Nelson Mandela

As educators who have a role in curriculum design, meaningful social media usage topics must be embedded in our teaching. Primary, secondary, and tertiary education should include topics around how mobile technologies and social media have the power to, give voice to marginalized groups, highlight issues that might not get much mainstream media attention, and hold politicians, governments, and powerful people accountable.

Currently, most of the discussions around social media activism and the power it possesses occurs outside of the classrooms. The topic of social media in general, is seen as something that is part of the leisure time, and not usually addressed in the students' lesson plans.

Digital citizenship which encompasses all the aforesaid topics discussed in this article, should be included in the curriculum for students to learn how to take ownership of their digital lives, and how they can continue to be actively engaged citizens.
